Running CAN Clip on Windows 10 and Windows 11
CAN Clip does not officially support Windows 10 or Windows 11. However, there are two practical approaches:
- Windows 7 compatibility mode + driver tweaks: Some users run CAN Clip on Windows 10 with Windows 7 compatibility mode enabled and manually installed drivers. Results vary — some functions may not work correctly.
- Dedicated laptop with Windows 7: The most reliable approach for native installation. Keep a dedicated older laptop with Windows 7 installed specifically for CAN Clip. This ensures full compatibility and stability.
- Virtual machine (VMware/VirtualBox): Run CAN Clip inside a Windows XP or Windows 7 virtual machine on your Windows 10/11 PC. USB passthrough for the CAN Clip dongle is required.
CAN Clip Interface Hardware
The CAN Clip interface is a specialized USB dongle — not a standard J2534 adapter. Without it, the software will not run. Options:
- Official Renault CAN Clip interface: Highest reliability, expensive
- Compatible clone interfaces: Widely available, lower cost, work with most CAN Clip functions including UCH programming and IMMO
- Important: Buy from a reliable source — poor quality clones can damage vehicle modules during ECU programming operations
