Volvo TechTool PTT 2.8.241 for Mack Trucks — Compatibility & Diagnostics Guide

Why Does Volvo TechTool Work on Mack Trucks?

Since Volvo Group acquired Mack Trucks in 2001, Mack’s heavy-duty truck engines have shared architecture with Volvo’s D-series engines. The Mack MP7 is functionally equivalent to the Volvo D11, and the MP8 shares architecture with the D13. Because the underlying ECU hardware and communication protocols are the same, Volvo TechTool PTT works natively on Mack trucks — not as an afterthought, but as a fully supported diagnostic path that Volvo Group dealers use for both brands.

Mack Models Supported in PTT 2.8.241

Model Application Engine Gearbox
Anthem (AN64T/AN70T) Long-haul highway MP8 (13L) / MP7 (11L) mDRIVE 13-speed AMT
Pinnacle CHU613/CXU613 Highway / heavy vocational MP7 / MP8 / MP10 (16L) mDRIVE / Allison
Granite GU/GR series Vocational / construction MP7 / MP8 / MP10 Manual / Allison / mDRIVE
TerraPro / LR series Refuse / mixer MP7 Allison automatic
MD6 / MD7 Medium-duty (NEW in 2.8.241) Cummins L9 / B6.7 (engine diagnostics via INSITE, not PTT) Allison

Note on MD6/MD7: Mack’s medium-duty trucks use Cummins engines — for engine ECU diagnostics on MD6/MD7, you need Cummins INSITE. PTT 2.8.241 covers the vehicle body controller and transmission on these models, but not the Cummins engine ECU.

Selecting Mack Vehicles in TechTool PTT

  1. Open PTT → New Session → Vehicle Identification
  2. Select Brand: Mack from the dropdown (separate from Volvo Trucks)
  3. Enter VIN or manually select model family
  4. PTT loads the Mack-specific parameter descriptions, fault code library, and procedure set

The ECU communication is identical to Volvo trucks — same VOCOM interface, same J1939 protocol. Only the fault code descriptions and parameter naming change to match Mack’s nomenclature (e.g., Mack calls the engine the “MP8” while Volvo calls the equivalent the “D13”).

mDRIVE AMT Diagnostics — Key Capability

The Mack mDRIVE automated manual transmission (used on Anthem and newer Pinnacle) is one of the most common sources of service calls on Mack forums. PTT 2.8.241 provides:

  • Full mDRIVE fault code access with freeze frame data
  • Clutch wear measurement and replacement threshold alerts
  • Clutch adaptation reset after clutch replacement (critical — mDRIVE must learn the new clutch engagement point)
  • Shift quality parameter programming
  • Live data: clutch position, gear selection, input/output shaft speeds

Forum note from Mack technicians: “The clutch adaptation reset in PTT is the one thing you absolutely need after a mDRIVE clutch job. Without it, the new clutch wears out in 50,000 miles because the transmission doesn’t know where engagement starts.”

MP7/MP8 Engine Fault Codes Commonly Seen on Mack

  • SPN 3364 / FMI 31 — SCR operator inducement (DEF quality or level). Identical to Volvo D13 — same hardware, same fault.
  • SPN 3251 / FMI 15/16 — DPF differential pressure. High soot load. Force regen via PTT Aftertreatment procedures.
  • SPN 27 / FMI 7 — EGR valve mechanical fault. Common on high-mileage MP8 engines. Run EGR sweep test in PTT.
  • SPN 157 / FMI 18 — Fuel rail pressure low. Check fuel filters, lift pump pressure.

VOCOM Connection on Mack Trucks

OBD port location on Mack trucks:

  • Anthem — Under dashboard, center console area
  • Pinnacle — Under dashboard, driver side near A-pillar
  • Granite / TerraPro — Varies by configuration; check under dash or at ECM access panel

Same VOCOM or VOCOM II used for Volvo — no different cable or interface needed. PTT auto-detects the Mack ECU configuration after VIN entry.

Conclusion

PTT 2.8.241 is a full-function diagnostic tool for Mack trucks — not a limited compatibility mode. If your shop services both Volvo and Mack, one PTT license covers both brands. For complete system setup, see the system requirements guide or the common errors guide.
