ODIS Service 25 for Beginners: First Diagnostic Session on a VAG Vehicle

This guide walks you through your first diagnostic session with ODIS Service 25 on a VAG vehicle β€” from connecting the interface to reading fault codes and understanding Guided Fault Finding.

What You Need

  • ODIS Service 25 VMware image running in VMware Player
  • VAS 5054A or VAS 6154 interface adapter
  • A VW, Audi, Seat, Skoda, or other VAG vehicle
  • Vehicle ignition key

Step 1: Open ODIS and Create an Order

  1. Start the VMware VM, pass the VAS interface to the VM, connect to the vehicle OBD2 port
  2. Open ODIS Service from the desktop
  3. Click “New Order” β€” ODIS will prompt you to enter a customer and vehicle
  4. Enter the VIN manually or click “Read VIN from vehicle” β€” ODIS auto-fills the vehicle data
  5. Confirm the vehicle year/model and proceed

Step 2: Run Self-Diagnosis (Full Scan)

Click “Self-Diagnosis” β€” ODIS scans every installed module in the vehicle. This takes 3–5 minutes on a typical VAG vehicle. You will see a list of all modules found and any fault codes stored in each.

Step 3: Open Guided Fault Finding (GFF)

GFF is what makes ODIS different from all other tools. For any fault code, click GFF to launch the dealer diagnostic procedure. GFF will:

  • Ask about current symptoms and driving conditions
  • Run automated component tests automatically
  • Show live measurement values to confirm faults
  • Present a prioritized list of probable causes
  • Link to the specific repair instruction for each finding

Step 4: View Live Data

Select any module β†’ Measuring Values to see real-time sensor data. For engine diagnostics, key values are: fuel rail pressure, MAF airflow, boost pressure, fuel trims, lambda (O2) values, injector pulse widths, and EGR position.

Step 5: Module Coding (Basics)

Select a module β†’ Coding. ODIS shows the current long coding string in hex and also provides a coding assistant that explains each byte and bit in plain language. Common coding tasks include enabling/disabling features (e.g., DRL, coming-home lights), adapting replacement modules, and configuring vehicle-specific options.

Always note the original coding before making any changes.
