ODIS Service 25 reads fault codes from every module across all VAG group vehicles. Below are the most common VAG fault codes with their causes and how ODIS helps resolve them.
VAG Fault Code Format
VAG uses both OBD2 standard P/B/C/U codes and VAG-specific 5-digit codes (e.g., 16394, 00865). ODIS displays both formats and links each code to its Guided Fault Finding (GFF) procedure — a step-by-step diagnostic flowchart developed by VW engineers.
Most Common VAG Engine Codes
- P0299 / 16683 — Turbocharger underboost. Common on 1.4 TSI and 2.0 TDI. Check intercooler pipes, N75 boost pressure valve, turbo actuator.
- P0171 / 16394 — Fuel system too lean, Bank 1. Check MAF sensor, air leaks, fuel pressure.
- P2187 / 16787 — System too lean at idle, Bank 1. O2 sensor, intake manifold gasket, or PCV valve leak.
- P0087 / 16395 — Fuel rail pressure too low. High-pressure fuel pump (HPFP) wear on TSI engines.
- P0401 / 16785 — EGR insufficient flow. EGR valve carbon buildup on TDI engines.
- P2015 / 17923 — Intake manifold runner position sensor. Common 2.0 TDI fault — flap motor or potentiometer failure.
Common DSG / Gearbox Codes
- P17BF — DSG mechatronic adaptation values exceeded. Requires DSG adaptation reset via ODIS basic settings.
- P189A — Clutch 1 or 2 slip. DSG clutch wear — mechatronic replacement or clutch pack replacement.
- U1121 — CAN communication fault with DSG. Wiring or module fault.
Common ABS / Chassis Codes
- 01130 / C0035–C0045 — Wheel speed sensor signal fault. Sensor, tone ring, or wiring fault. ODIS live data confirms which wheel.
- 00290 / C0561 — ABS control module: implausible signal. Steering angle sensor calibration via ODIS basic settings often resolves this.
